NO SANCTUM FOR THE INNOCENT

Scene 1:
Fade in:
INT. DISASTER SHELTER BASEMENT – DAY
A dusty, unkempt room has various junk piled up on one side. Light by a single, dark window and candlelight.

In the corner of the room, a woman sits up on a single rugged mattress, a photograph in her hand.

Mum:
“Loud audible sigh”
Fade out:
Fade in:
Title sequence
“No sanctum for the innocent” appears on the screen.

Scene 2:
Cut in:
EXT. FOREST BORDERING THE CITY – DAY
A loud drone flies over the quiet forest, the drones UI display rapidly changes every second, bits of information scrolling rapidly, a targeting circle obviously looking for something. There is quiet muffled radio chatter in the background.

Voice one:
“No signs of the target yet. Over”
Voice Two:
“Try a little lower. Over”
A gunshot can be heard in the background, something wizzes past the drone.

Voice Two:
“What was that?”
A second gunshot is heard, a bullet strikes the drone, making the display go hay-wire.

Voice One:
“s*(static)*t, we have been hit, over”
Cut out:
Cut In:
A man in a gas-mask, wearing a heavy coat, pulls back the bolt of a rifle, lowering it do his side. Behind him stands an older teenager, comforting a child, both wearing gas masks. The older man with rifle goes to comfort the child.

Dad:
How long do we have?
Warren:
Not enough time, we need to get moving.

Dad:
Warren… (sigh), you and Donovan need to go alone. Your Mother needs the meds, and I can buy you time.

Warren:
What? Are you crazy?
Donovan is crying, he comes and latches onto his father’s leg.

Donovan:
Dad, don’t go, I don’t want you to go.

Dad:
Don’t be silly, I will see you back at home, I just need to take care of these nutcases.

Dad embraces Donovan in a full bear hug
Dad:
Now, you take care of Mum when you get back, ok mate?Dad then moves over to Warren, putting his hand on his shoulder.

Dad:
And you, take care of your little brother, don’t let anything happen to him.

Warren nods as his father passes him two bottles of anti-biotic tablets. Warren shoves them into his pockets.

As the boys begin to walk away, they turn to look at their father one last time.

Dad:
Don’t worry, I will be fine. Have something ready to eat for when I get back.

The boys walk away, when they are out of sight, cheerful eyes turn to stress and worry on Dads face.

EXT. FIRE TRAIL – DAY
The two brothers, now in a totally different part of the woods, have been walking for a while. Donovan is lagging behind, so Warren decides to stop.

Warren:
Get the map out of the outer pocket, will ya?
Donovan removes a large sprawling map out of Warrens backpack. It seems to be hand-drawn on butches’ paper, and has a variety of marks and colours. Warren puts it agenised a tree, and point to a part of the map.

Warren:
We need to get back over the border.

As he finishes his sentence, gunshots can be heard in the far distance. The sounds finish with a rapid secession of 5 shots, revealing that Dad is most likely dead.

EXT. FOREST BORDERING THE CITY – DAY
Same location as first scene, now a burly-looking gang member stands in place of Dad, holding out a smoking 1911 style handgun. It is revealed he has two others with him, one searching though Dads pack, the other looking for a clue as-to what direction the boys went in.

Scavenger:
They’re not here.

Boss:
*Angry sigh* The others must have gone ahead. HE was just a distraction. Those filthy selfish rats, stealing our shit. When we find them, I’m going to crack their skulls.

Boss walks over to tracker, who is sitting on ground, examining some footprints.

Boss:
Well? Which way did they go?
Tracker points with her hand.

Boss:
(On radio) There’s two more, send out another surveillance drone.

Scene 5
Fade in:
EXT. FERN GULLY PATH – DAY
The brothers are walking down the path at a steady pace, both looking straight ahead sharing a blank expression.

Donovan:
What’s that sound?
Warren:
What?
Donovan:
That buzzing.

Warren:
Shit!
Warren grabs Donovan and pulls him into a ditch on the side of the path.

Warren:
Stay down.

In the distance, a drone can be seen flying a couple of meters above the ground. Warren pulls out his folding rifle, but when he sees that Donovan is scared, he decides agenised it. The drone passes, and there is silence.

Warren:
You can get up kno…
Donovan is staring at a lifeless body in a radiation suit. Warren covers his brother’s visor.
Cut out:
Cut in:
Warren is bent over the body, checking the pockets. Behind him, Donovan is holding a pair of keys.

Donovan:
What about these?
Warren has a surprised look.

Cut Out:
Scene 6:
Cut in: (door transition)
INT. THE SHED – Dusk/night
The key opens up a shed door. The inside of the shed is rather small, and inside it is dusty, uneven and cramped. The pair look around, and put their packs down.

Cut out
Warren opens up a packet of home brand biscuits, and goes to take his mask off.
Donovan:
*Crying*
Warren puts down the biscuits and goes to comfort Donovan, sitting agenised the wall next to him, and getting comfortable for the night ahead.

Scene 7:
Sharp cut in:
EXT. FOREST CLEARING – Day
Warren gets up and leaves the shed, his rifle drawn. He sees something in the woods, and pulls up his rifle to shoot at it. Back at the shed Donovan hears a shot.
Donovan:
*Gasp*
It turns out the shot was fired by the gang Boss, Warren is now on the ground.

Boss:
Now I’ve got you.

Boss puts his foot on Warren’s chest
Boss:
Where are they? Where are the tablets?
Warren:
*Heavy breath* *Pain wince* *Silence*
Boss:
You! Go check the area, he must have bunkered down some ware nearby last night.

Boss points at Tracker, and she leaves in the direction of the shed.

Boss:
(Talking to Warren) Who do you think you are taking our shit like that.

Boss lifts up his mask and spits on Warren, before replacing the mask on his face.

Scene 8:
Cut in:
INT. THE SHED – DAY
Cut in:
Tracker approaches the shed, she can hear sobbing and is startled by this. She proceeds to open the door with cation, rifle drawn. She flings the door open.

Donovan:
*Sobbing* *whimper* Pl…Please.

Donovan is clutching the anti-biotics in is arms.

Donovan:
Please. They are for my Mum.

Tracker puts down the gun, and approaches Donovan.

(Donovan drops the Bottle.) They share eye contact until tracker begins to silently tear up. She kneels down, and put her hand on his shoulder.
Tracker:
*sigh*. You need to go.

Tracker hands the pills back to Donovan.

Scene 9:
Cut in:
EXT: OUTSIDE SHED / FOREST CLEARING – DAY
Donovan stands a few feet away from Tracker. They face each other. Tracker nods her head, and Donovan walks off down the path. He turns around once again and nods himself.

Tracker arrives back at the clearing.

Boss:
Well, did you find anything?
Tracker shakes her head
Boss:
Well, where do you think they went?
Tracker points in the opposite direction. They head off that way, leaving Warren lying still on the ground, his mask having been taken off.
Scene 10:

INT. DISASTER SHELTER BASEMENT – DUSK
The woman from the beginning of the movie lies, asleep in the room. Donovan comes in through the door. He takes his mask off, and puts the pills next to his mother’s bed, before lying down under the covers next to her.

Alt ending (scene 11)

EXT. CLEARING – DUSK
Warren sits up in the grass, disoriented, but still alive.

Warren:
*Gasp*
