EFFECTS OF GAMBLING AMONG YOUTH IN KENYA TODAY
Introduction
Today, there are so many addictions that youth can get involved in. Alcohol and drugs may be the most well known addiction, but many people would not expect that gambling would be a growing addiction. Actually, gambling is the single-most growing addiction among youth today. Youth can gamble anything from lotto tickets to the sports. There are so many different options if you are gambling. With it being so easy for youth to get involved, gambling will continue to be the fastest growing addiction for years to come.Over the years, gambling options have increased immensely. Gambling means taking part in any activity or game where you risk money in order to win money. Gambling is a game of chance, although some games can involve skill too. Some gambling like for example lotteries, slot machines, or bingo depends on pure luck and no amount of knowledge or practice can help a person win. But there are other games, like pool or darts that require skill. Sometimes play and practicing can influence the results. Kenya’s ratio of youth (aged 15-24) to the population stands at 20.3 per cent, above the world’s average of 15.8 per cent and 19.2 percent for Africa. The millennials add up to 10.1 million out of Kenya’s population of 49.7 million, data from US-based Population Reference Bureau (PRB) in Aug 27, 2017. People gambling in Kenya are mainly youth aged in between 18 to 35 of all genders and some of the adults. The origin of gambling cannot be certainly known for certain because it has been there since the prehistoric times. In Mesopotamia the earliest six-sided dice date to about 3000 BC. In China, gambling houses were widespread in the first millennium BC, and betting on fighting animals was common. Lotto games and dominoes appeared in China as early as the 10th century. Playing cards appeared in the ninth century in China. Records trace gambling in Japan back at least as far as the 14th century. Poker, the most popular U.S. card game associated with gambling, derives from the Persian game As-Nas, dating back to the 17th century. The first known casino, the Ridotto, started operating in 1638 in Venice, Italy.
Purpose of the study
The purpose of this essay is getting to know the motivation of gambling among youth. Also how gambling influences the youth’s behavior. Contributing factors for gambling activities.
Thesis statement
Gambling does more harm than good to the youths in Kenya. One way to stop gambling is to remove the elements necessary for gambling to occur in your life and replace them with healthier choices.
The Body
Kenya has the highest number of betting youth, this is according to a recent GeoPoll rapid survey carried out among youth between the ages of 17-35 in Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya. Based on a rapid survey conducted by GeoPoll earlier this year, over 50% of earnings by youth consumers is spent on personal treatment (including gambling). The average amount spent on bets is below Kshs 5000 per month. A majority have never won any amount above.

The causes and effects of gambling vary differently with individuals involved. They desire to win money to clinical depression. This may be because of various reasons, for example, unemployment to family problems. High rate of unemployment for the youth has been among the main causes of gambling addiction. A number of youths who gamble are addicted to gambling because they are unable to resist the urge of gambling despite knowing the consequences that comes with it. Some of the youths use gambling as a tool to pass time activities and some due to peer pressure while others the money they use to gamble will not have any effect on them. The effects can be devastating which can lead to anxiety and depression or even them being suicidal.
Conclusion
The effects of gambling are almost immediately overwhelming; gambling can result in uncontrolled cravings and economic crisis. Youth who have a low self-esteem may believe that they are not in control of their actions and emotions. Gambling can leave players with devastating effects. Government and non-government Organizations and other stakeholders involved should come up with policies and strategies to protect the youths from engaging in gambling prematurely. This would make youth’s mature decisions on involvement to gambling. Youths should also be motivated to come up with creative ideas which should be enhanced to create self-employment among the youths and help to control their involvement in gambling.
