An introduction to the new phase of LED
Nowadays, human’s life is entirely dependent on Internet. The most famous telecommunication broadband system used is Wi-Fi. But, it has various disadvantages. The typically faced problem now-a-days is that, Wi-Fi get easily hacked. This is because it works through long ranged Radio waves so ; we have been introduced to the new revolution of data transmission that is Li-Fi. It was first proposed by a renowned German physicist, Dr.Harald Haas coined the term Li-Fi in 2011 at TED global talks. He presented a HD video of a blooming flower that was projected on a screen. LED’s which are not interconnected to one another are the basis of data transmission in Li-Fi. It doesn’t work through radio waves but through visible light spectrum. The spectrum of these rays is 1000 times massive than radio waves.
NEED FOR Li-Fi
In earlier times, we had wired cables for internet connectivity which used to take couple of minutes for transmission of data. Then we turned our transmittivity by using Ethernet which was unfortunately non portable. Then we switched to Wi-Fi and it had been very useful in our daily routine. But as everything has cons, even Wi-Fi had. It is easily hacked, transmission is not too fast. It also gets disrupted if the access point changes. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi could not even be used in sensitized area to people like hospital, aircrafts. So now, the world has change with Li-Fi. It is Bidirectional transmission medium. Li-Fi is based on Visible Light Spectrum (VLC), the spectrum of which has an overwhelming width of 10,000 times larger than Radio waves. In local area, the data transmitted through Li-Fi occurs with the speed of 224Gbps. Li-Fi uses Light Emitting Diode (LED) which is cheaply available over huge area. Li-Fi is the complementary to the Traditional Wireless Communication.
Working of Li-Fi
Li-Fi is a Bidirectional, High speed, fully networked and Wireless Communication. Due to constant supply of current LED glow and if we vary constant current LED start Flickering. The Flickering of LED is used in Li-Fi .If no current is flowing LED will not glow and this will be transferred as a zero to the photo detector. Similarly, when the maximum current is flowing through LED, LED will glow and this will be transferred as one to the receiver or photo detector. So, in this way we can transmit the data in the form of 1 ; 0 to the receiver. If the flickering of LED happens million times per second, so the flickering will not be seen by our naked eye. The data which is coming from web server or internet will go to modem which will provide necessary modulation to the incoming data stream then this data stream will be transferred to the LED driver which changes the Driving current for the LED bulb according to the incoming streaming data. The streaming data will be transferred at the LED bulb which will give the output as 1 ; 0. This 1 ; 0 will be received by photo receiver. The optical received data is first converted into electrical signal using photo receiver or photo diode and after signal conditioning this data is fed to the computer or laptop or internet demanding gadget. So, to receive the data at the receiver side we require Li-If dongle which consist of a photo receiver and IR transmitter. The Infrared transmitter can be used to transfer the uplink data back to the LED source.
Li-Fi V/S Wi-Fi
Security: Li-Fi is unaccustomed as compared to Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi connection can easily be hacked but that is not possible with Li-Fi.
Data Transmission Rate: Li-Fi’s data transmission rate is very high as compared to that of Li-Fi’s. This is because Wi-Fi works through radio waves and not through visible light.
Range: Li-Fi provides short ranged visible light whereas Wi-Fi provides longer range radio waves.
Traffic Control: In Li-Fi, traffic control is more as compared to Wi-Fi’s.
License Requirement: No License is required for the use of Li-Fi’s unlike of Wi-FI’s.
Cost of Installation: As everything has cons, Installation charges of Li-Fi are greater than Wi-Fi.
Working Concept: Wi-Fi Works through formation of Topologies. On the other hand, Li-Fi works by direct binary data.
Li-Fi introduces us to a new world formation with unprecedented data and bandwidth. Also, a world where every LED acts as an access point for internet connection. Li-Fi leads to a new epoch of 5g and 6g. Though it has a few disadvantages, it leads to the epic advancement of the new generations.
